Tjøtta is mentioned in the Heimskringla many times; this was the home of Hárek of Tjøtta, one of the leaders of the peasant army which killed Olav Haraldsson at the Battle of Stiklestad. There is archeological evidence of Iron Age agriculture in the area- Tjøtta gard, the largest medieval farm in Northern Norway, is also located in Tjøtta.

From 1862 until 1965, the village of Tjøtta was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Tjøtta.

Peaceful grassy area in Røssjøen Nature Reserve

This site are located on a grassy area well suited for freecamping. There are a picnic table and firepit on the spot. A path down to the water makes an easy access for fishing or bathing in the lake.

Røssjøen Nature Reserve is located next to Langsua National Park in the municipalities of Etnedal, Nord-Aurdal and Nordre Land. The area was protected 11.3.2011. The nature reserve has larger and smaller lakes, large marshes and dry ridges with old pine forest. The area is grazed, and is important for rare birds and plant species.
